NCERT vs Reference Books: What Actually Matters for Board Exams

30 July 2026 · Yesunadhareddy SereddyNCERTStudy TipsBoards

NCERT first, always

Board papers are set from the NCERT textbook. Every year students lose marks not because the paper was hard, but because they skipped NCERT examples in favour of a thick reference book.

A simple rule

Finish 100% of NCERT before opening any reference book.

When reference books help

  • Extra practice for numericals in Physics and Chemistry
  • Additional HOTS and case-study questions
  • Competitive prep (JEE/NEET) alongside boards

When they hurt

They hurt when they replace NCERT, when they introduce out-of-syllabus topics, and when the sheer volume kills revision time. Pick exactly one reference book per subject.
