Assertion and Reason (A&R) questions have become a permanent fixture across CBSE Science, Mathematics, and Social Science question papers for Classes 9 to 12. Aligned with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE), these questions test conceptual depth, logical causality, and critical thinking rather than rote recall.

Many students lose marks not because they do not know the subject matter, but because they struggle to determine whether the Reason correctly explains the Assertion. Here is a systematic method to eliminate ambiguity and secure full marks in these questions.

The Anatomy of an A&R Question

Every A&R problem provides two distinct statements:

  1. Assertion (AA): A declarative statement presenting a fact, law, or observation.
  2. Reason (RR): A statement that provides a scientific, mathematical, or logical justification.

You must choose one of the four standard options:

  • (a) Both AA and RR are true, and RR is the correct explanation of AA.
  • (b) Both AA and RR are true, but RR is not the correct explanation of AA.
  • (c) AA is true, but RR is false.
  • (d) AA is false, but RR is true.

(Note: In some school-level tests, option (d) may state that both are false, but standard CBSE papers designate option (d) as "AA is false, but RR is true.")

The 3-Step Elimination Protocol

Do not read both statements simultaneously and jump to a conclusion. Follow this sequential filter:

Step 2: Evaluate Reason (RR) independently

Read the Reason as an isolated factual statement. Do not think about its relationship to AA yet.

  • If RR is false (while AA is true), your evaluation ends. The answer is (c).

Step 3: Insert the word "BECAUSE"

If both AA and RR are individually true, combine them into one continuous sentence using the connector "because" or "since": [Assertion]BECAUSE[Reason]\text{[Assertion]} \quad \mathbf{BECAUSE} \quad \text{[Reason]}

Read the combined sentence aloud in your head:

  • If the combined sentence forms a logically sound, complete causal explanation, select (a).
  • If the combined sentence makes two disconnected (even if factually accurate) claims, select (b).

  2. Check RR: The formula stated for Coulomb's law is correct. True.

2. Chemistry: The "Independent Fact" Trap

  • Assertion (AA): Noble gases have very low boiling points.
  • Reason (RR): Noble gases are monoatomic and held together by weak dispersion forces.

Analysis:

  1. Check AA: True (noble gases exist as gases with weak interatomic forces).
  2. Check RR: True (they are monoatomic with weak London dispersion forces).
  3. Apply connector: "Noble gases have low boiling points because only weak dispersion forces hold their monoatomic atoms together, requiring minimal thermal energy to separate."

Now compare this with:

  • Assertion (AA): Graphite is a good conductor of electricity.
