The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), aligned with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE), has significantly increased the weightage of competency-based questions. Among these, Assertion-Reason (A-R) questions appear prominently across Science, Mathematics, and Social Science papers for Classes 9 through 12.

Unlike standard multiple-choice questions where you select a direct answer, A-R questions evaluate two distinct layers of understanding:

  1. Factual accuracy: Is each statement individually true or false?
  2. Causal reasoning: Does the second statement logically explain why the first statement occurs?

For the 2026-27 academic session, school boards place clear emphasis on conceptual depth over formulaic memorisation. Mastering a structured technique for A-R items eliminates guesswork and secures critical marks in both board examinations and competitive tests like JEE and NEET.

Decoding the Four Standard Options

Every Assertion-Reason question presents two statements: Assertion (A) and Reason (R). You must evaluate them against four standardized choices.

The 4-Step Elimination Method

Follow this systematic approach whenever you encounter an A-R question to avoid common cognitive traps.

Step 1: Read Assertion (A) independently

Ignore Reason (R) completely. Ask yourself: Is statement A factually true or false based on NCERT concepts?

  • If Assertion is False, eliminate options (a), (b), and (c). The answer is (d). You finish the question in under 15 seconds.

Step 2: Read Reason (R) independently

Cover Assertion (A) and analyze Reason (R) as an isolated statement. Ask yourself: Is statement R factually true or false?

  • If Reason is False while Assertion is True, the answer is (c).

Step 3: Apply the "Because Test"

If both Assertion and Reason are individually True, options (a) and (b) remain. Combine both sentences into a single thought by placing the word "because" or "since" between them:
